What is a headdress?

When some people think of American Indians, the first thing they think of are people in a barren desert, next to a tipi dressed in buckskin and feathers.

Truth is, most tribes never used headdresses and not the most commonly used.  Feathered war bonnets or headdresses were worn by honored men, sometimes into battle, but  most often for ceremonial occasions, and were seen as items of great spiritual and magical importance.
The bonnet had to be earned through brave deeds in battle because the feathers signified the deeds themselves. Some warriors might have obtained only two or three honor feathers in their whole lifetime, so difficult were they to earn. The bonnet was also a mark of highest respect because it could never be worn without the consent of the leaders of the tribe.

With that being said, it's so un-PC that I'm wearing a headdress, so no need to tell me that.  But this isn't about me, it's about Drew Barrymore.  A few weeks ago, this photo of Drew was posted (and quickly taken down).  I read the article, which didn't say much, and I'm very sad that I couldn't find any kind of comment from the star.    I just don't like her now, because her headdress is bigger than mine.

While in Vegas

This past weekend I was in Las Vegas for a hockey tournament, with my hockey team Bad Kitty, and I realized I'd never been to the Las Vegas sign.  So I decided to take my history book with me and share some history with the locals.

A new year

Looking back on 2011 seems like a blur.  I was going to try and sum up the year for a Christmas letter, but nothing stuck out in my mind.  I know I did stuff...I think?  I did spend a week in San Diego being an actor, more time filming and working on some amazing projects and honing my social media skills.  I'll try to keep track of my resolutions and plans for this year.

First stop the Consumer Electronics's Show (CES) and the International Academy of Web Television (IAWTV) awards show in Vegas.  I'm pitching a show idea during one of the panels.  A show you say?  Yup, I guess it's time for that, right?  I've had the opportunity to work on several different productions in different capacities and I reckon it's time I try a show of my own.  I've been writing my own show now for several years.  I should probably finish that too!  Although I am blending some of the subject matter and putting it in my other projects, such as my YouTube Channel.

While prepping for the new year, I found some new hobbies, Hooping and making Kombucha.    I'll let you know how that goes.

Happy New Year!

This Day in American Indian History - 1985

Today we mention a taboo word in Indian Country - "Blood Quantum".    I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject.  Leave a comment here, or on my Facebook or send me a video response on Youtube.
Blood Quantum Laws or Indian Blood Laws is an umbrella term that describes legislation enacted in the United States to define membership in Native American tribes or nations.   Read more on Wikipedia about the history of this law.

Youtube changes...again

If you're on YouTube, have you been wondering where your all your friends went?  I've been trying to understand what the deal is and after some research today on the google help page, this answers a few questions.  Hope it helps.
To clear up some confusion, this doesn't mean that all of your old friends are now added to your subscriptions. Accounts that you had as both a Friend and a Subscription are in your subscriptions now, but accounts you were only Friends with are now Contacts.
For those accounts that were your Friends (but who you were not subscribed to), you can easily add these contacts to your subscriptions by going to the Subscription Manager (http://www.YouTube.com/subscription_manager/friends). You can also access the Subscription Manager from the homepage, by clicking on the link below the subscriptions feed on your homepage that lists the number of subs you have (see image).
Friends that you don't want to subscribe to will be added to your contacts, which you can find at http://www.YouTube.com/address_book
You may have noticed a number of contacts that are not displayed in the Address Book. Thanks to the merge, your contacts list may have grown by a large quantity. The Address Book can only display up to a certain number of friends, so while you might not see all of your contacts if you have thousands of them, they're still counted and. Your privacy settings will apply to all contacts, even those not displayed.

Check out the link from Google Help or here.

Have a great day.
